NOMAG Digital Issue #3 – Jules Bates
In our third and final installment of digitizing the legendary punk publication NOMAG, we offer a glimpse into an issue dedicated to the passing of photographer Jules Bates, who was a large part of the magazine. Jules was killed in a motorcycle accident while either leaving or arriving to his photo studio at 4th and Normandie in Los Angeles on September 26th, 1982. This issue features lots of his photography, as well as an obituary written by Bruce Kalberg himself. The cover features Suzi Gardner (of L7) and Patrice Rapose, photographed by Bob Seidemann.

NOMAG Digital Issue #2 – Geza X
For our second installment of digitizing the legendary publication, Reserve LA offers a glimpse into one of the more unique issues of NOMAG. This issue has a feature article on Geza X, a crucial part of the 80’s punk scene, and includes an extremely rare flexi vinyl of Geza X’s “Mean Mr. Mommy Man”. The cover features Rick Wilder of the Mau Maus, photographed by Frank Gargani.

Reserve LA Presents: NOMAG by Bruce Kalberg
Reserve LA offers a glimpse into LA’s early 80s, punk rock scene via NOMAG.
Edited and published by LA’s punk rock cultural anthropologist Bruce Kalberg, NOMAG featured content against the popular media grain. Filled with controversial contributions from some of LA’s most noted punk icons including Black Flag and Social Distortion, NOMAG blazed a trail for later alternative publications and serves as a time capsule of one of the great pop culture shifts of the early 1980s.
