Graphic Designers In The USA/1
Obviously some heavy hitting names on the cover of this one—Herb Lubalin, Louis Danziger, Peter Max, Henry Wolf—so we’ll let that speak for itself. All in all, a great book documenting the work of design legends.
Excerpt from preface:
“The problems of the graphic designer are quite different than those facing the artist who deal essentially with the private image. The designer’s work is public and must appeal to the public; his commissions are largely specific; his function is to provide information, entertainment, and aesthetic pleasure.”

Design Source Book
Seems like a pretty bold thing to name a book. Either that or just really vague. Whether or not you consider this the design source book, it definitely is full of great designs of all mediums, from “1850 to the present day” (present day being 1989, the year this book was released).

Modern Publicity 1954-55
Don’t judge a book by its cover. While it may look pretty bleak from a distance, this mid-1950’s edition of Modern Publicity contains some great mid-century design references, which as most of you know was a golden era of sorts for the development of 20th century design. Modern Publicity is an annual survey of the best graphic designs in international advertising and communications. The illustrations in this book were selected from over 7000 entries submitted by designers all over the world. The book contains separate sections on poster design, press advertising, direct mail, trademarks and house-styles, letterheads, packaging, TV and ...

Pinball: The Lure Of The Silver Ball
We love this book to death. It’s a must-have for any vintage arcade game enthusiast. It goes into great detail about each game, and gives an in-depth timeline of pretty much any pinball game you could think of from the beginning of time. Or, at least the beginning of pinball.
Excerpt from preface:
“This book provides a complete survey of the ultimate 20th century toy: the graphic artistry, the technical innovations— from the 1930’s when the game was than a coin-operated bagatelle, to the present day, when machines talk back. Theme games, celebrity linked-games, bumpers, kickers, solenoids, and flippers, Pinball is ...

Graphis Posters 84
A great book filled with beautiful poster designs from all around the world during 1983-84. A great reference specifically for 1980’s poster design that isn’t quite the hyper-colorful stuff from the later 80’s everyone would expect.
Excerpt from preface:
“The cover picture by Holger Mathies—a brightly coloured armchair sitting complacently in a brown field—symbolizes one essence of poster art: the injection of light and color into an often dull daily round. Of course posters are primarily intended to sell products or to draw attention to exhibitions or performances, but behind this primary function a second raison d’être is concealed: the artistic dimension ...

FAME: Portraits Of Celebrated People
A super colorful, 120-page book with a pretty self-explanatory title. Fun fact: There’s some work in here from our good friend Mick Haggerty, who was actually one of Rick Klotz’s art school professors, and in the past has collaborated with Freshjive on a series of tees.
An excerpt from Brad’s preface:
“The idea for Fame grew out of my last book, Phonographics, the art of record album covers. I wanted my new book to reflect the changes and accomplishments of recent illustration. The more I looked, the more I discovered: illustration had moved from album covers and posters into the mainstream of ...
