Reserve Window Design by John Downer
We hired our good friend John Downer, who is a professional sign painter & typographer, to fly to LA to do gold leaf lettering on our store window & transom. Glass gilding is becoming a lost art that only a few dozen people in the United States still know how perform. Stay tuned for a video interview with John, where he explains this beautiful process in detail.
A straight-on view of the gold leaf sign on our window at 420 North Fairfax. To achieve the pale highlights in the name Reserve, John applied matte varnish to the glass before laying the ...

FAME: Portraits Of Celebrated People
A super colorful, 120-page book with a pretty self-explanatory title. Fun fact: There’s some work in here from our good friend Mick Haggerty, who was actually one of Rick Klotz’s art school professors, and in the past has collaborated with Freshjive on a series of tees.
An excerpt from Brad’s preface:
“The idea for Fame grew out of my last book, Phonographics, the art of record album covers. I wanted my new book to reflect the changes and accomplishments of recent illustration. The more I looked, the more I discovered: illustration had moved from album covers and posters into the mainstream of ...

Bodyscapes: A Celebration
A beautiful book of black and white nudes from photographer Martin H. Schreiber. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Martin Schreiber immigrated to the United States in 1952. During the turbulent ’60’s, he dropped out of college and fatefully joined the Army, where he went to photo lab school. Taking up photography full time after the service, Schreiber went on to teach and lecture at the New School/Parsons in New York. Returning to his European roots, he presently lives outside Paris. His work has been published internationally in every major magazine and has been the subject of over 40 group and solo ...

Graphis Annual 80|81
Graphis Annual is the international annual of advertising and editorial graphics. In this 1980-81 edition we see some really nice early 80’s advertising design towards the front pages, then the second half seems a little transitional between 70’s and 80’s design.
Excerpt from preface, written by the legendary Paul Rand:
“Design is a problem-solving activity. It provides a means of clarifying, synthesizing and dramatizing a world, a picture, a product, or an event. A serious barrier to the realization of good design, however, is the layers of management inherent in any bureaucratic structure. For aside from sheer prejudice or simple unawareness, one ...

Freshjive Fall 2010 Preview
After 20 years as one of the most controversial streetwear brands, Freshjive is not only denouncing their own name and branding beginning in 2010, but is altogether abandoning many of the aspects that previously classified them as a streetwear brand. They’ve taken full creative advantage of the versatility of de-branding and have reintroduced the line combining a mix of classic and contemporary styling, with a strong focus on garment design. The t-shirt line has taken a surrealist angle, while still expressing their particular take on culture and the world at large.
