“If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever.” A dark sentiment for sure, but if you are familiar with George Orwell’s seminal work then this comes as no surprise. Orwell wrote this distopian novel in post-WWII in England and it was heavily influenced by the horrors of war he witnessed. In 1984 the individual is always subordinated to the state, and it is in part this philosophy which allows the Party to manipulate and control humanity. The protagonist, Winston Smith, attempts to rebel against Big Brother, but eventually is captured, tortured, and re-educated into a submissive state. Freshjive has always been anti-authoritarian brand that encourages everyone to question those who wield power and control information. Stay rebellious. Freshjive Spring tees have arrived at Reserve.  The first of the shirts which will be profiled is the “Life is so Sweet.” The shirt’s imagery is both proactive and multi-layered with a number of cultural references on display. First is the quote, “Life is so sweet on a bicycle seat.” This is true, especially when that seat is a Brooks. Brooks was founded some 150 years ago after the owners horse died and he had ride a bicycle to work. Brooks was so dissatisfied with the quality of the ride that he set about making the best seat possible. Second, is the posterior which is so gracefully mounted on the bicycle. The image brings to mind a couple of songs (one more well known than the other): “Bicycle” by Queen and “The Bicycle Song” by Jango Edwards. Queen famously staged a nude bicycle ride starring a crowd of naked women which they shot for the single album cover. Edwards, on the other hand, sang a reggae song in which one of the main lyrics was “Oh, life would be so sweet, if I was a bicycle seat.”  All of which come to mind when look at this shirt.  Available in white and light gray.
