Bruce Kalberg
From 1979-1984 Bruce Kalberg photographed virtually every band and personality against the backdrop of the first rush of Punk Rock in Los Angeles and Hollywood. As publisher and chief creative force behind NO MAGAZINE (NOMAG) Bruce photographed both the music and art scene nightly in his studio in Echo Park creating a portrait of fashion and underground culture like no one else. This was the real culture made up of outsiders, losers, immigrants, Punk Rockers from generation one ...

Reserve LA Presents: NOMAG by Bruce Kalberg
Reserve LA offers a glimpse into LA’s early 80s, punk rock scene via NOMAG.
Edited and published by LA’s punk rock cultural anthropologist Bruce Kalberg, NOMAG featured content against the popular media grain. Filled with controversial contributions from some of LA’s most noted punk icons including Black Flag and Social Distortion, NOMAG blazed a trail for later alternative publications and serves as a time capsule of one of the great pop culture shifts of the early 1980s.
Now for the first time, NOMAG will exist digitally. We will be providing digitized editions of NOMAG on our blog weekly leading up ...

Candid Little Rock
In the 80’s, people were out, and people were living. No matter where you were at, or what you were doing, whether in Hollywood, California, or Little Rock, Arkansas it seemed as though folks were out and living for the moment. Compiling a collection of iconic black and white photographs, six photographers set out to capture the essence of Little Rock, Arkansas through the people that inhabited the city. Shooting everything from architecture and design, to police men and civilians, Candid Little Rock honestly portrays Arkansas living in the 80’s.

Memphis: Objects, Furniture, and Patterns
The Memphis Group was an Italian design and architecture movement of the 1980s, more specifically a group composed of Italian designers and architects who created a series of products in 1981. Named after the Bob Dylan song Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, the movement was a reaction against the post-Bauhaus “black box” designs of the 1970s and had a sense of humor that was lacking at the time in design.
They disagreed with the approach of the time and challenged the idea that products had to follow conventional shapes and colours and textures and patterns. It was conceived by the group to be a ...

Design Source Book
Seems like a pretty bold thing to name a book. Either that or just really vague. Whether or not you consider this the design source book, it definitely is full of great designs of all mediums, from “1850 to the present day” (present day being 1989, the year this book was released).

Graphis Posters 84
A great book filled with beautiful poster designs from all around the world during 1983-84. A great reference specifically for 1980’s poster design that isn’t quite the hyper-colorful stuff from the later 80’s everyone would expect.
Excerpt from preface:
“The cover picture by Holger Mathies—a brightly coloured armchair sitting complacently in a brown field—symbolizes one essence of poster art: the injection of light and color into an often dull daily round. Of course posters are primarily intended to sell products or to draw attention to exhibitions or performances, but behind this primary function a second raison d’être is concealed: the artistic dimension ...
