Graphis Posters 84

A great book filled with beautiful poster designs from all around the world during 1983-84. A great reference specifically for 1980’s poster design that isn’t quite the hyper-colorful stuff from the later 80’s everyone would expect. Excerpt from preface: “The cover picture by Holger Mathies—a brightly coloured armchair sitting complacently in a brown field—symbolizes one essence of poster art: the injection of light and color into an often dull daily round. Of course posters are primarily intended to sell products or to draw attention to exhibitions or performances, but behind this primary function a second raison d’être is concealed: the artistic dimension ...

FAME: Portraits Of Celebrated People

A super colorful, 120-page book with a pretty self-explanatory title. Fun fact: There’s some work in here from our good friend Mick Haggerty, who was actually one of Rick Klotz’s art school professors, and in the past has collaborated with Freshjive on a series of tees. An excerpt from Brad’s preface: “The idea for Fame grew out of my last book, Phonographics, the art of record album covers. I wanted my new book to reflect the changes and accomplishments of recent illustration. The more I looked, the more I discovered: illustration had moved from album covers and posters into the mainstream of ...

Graphis Annual 80|81

Graphis Annual is the international annual of advertising and editorial graphics. In this 1980-81 edition we see some really nice early 80’s advertising design towards the front pages, then the second half seems a little transitional between 70’s and 80’s design. Excerpt from preface, written by the legendary Paul Rand: “Design is a problem-solving activity. It provides a means of clarifying, synthesizing and dramatizing a world, a picture, a product, or an event. A serious barrier to the realization of good design, however, is the layers of management inherent in any bureaucratic structure. For aside from sheer prejudice or simple unawareness, one ...
